Home     /     Blog     /     IR Touch vs Capacitive Touch Display
By Mr.Sun

Infrared and projected capacitive touch are two ways to detect interaction with a screen. Neither technology name, by itself, tells you how well a complete display will perform in your classroom or meeting room. Compare the selected hardware, controller, software and writing tools together.

How the sensing approaches differ

Infrared touch systems detect interruptions in a grid of light beams around the display surface. Projected capacitive, often shortened to PCAP, uses a sensing structure associated with the glass to detect changes in capacitance. These different approaches affect the design of the touch assembly and the way supported input objects are detected.

Elo’s IR touch explanation and touch technology comparison provide technical background. Their product-specific ratings should not be treated as specifications for an OKVIEW model.

Compare the writing experience, not a label

Use the intended pen and application to write small letters, draw slow diagonals and trace near all four edges. Check whether the ink appears where the user expects. Then repeat with a second writer and with the palm close to the surface. Ask the supplier to identify which behaviors come from the touch controller and which depend on the software.

Questions to include in a sample test

  • Which pens, fingers or gloves are supported on this exact configuration?
  • What happens when two users write or move objects together?
  • Does recognition remain consistent near corners and screen edges?
  • How does the system behave under the room’s normal lighting?
  • What cleaning instructions and service procedures apply?

Do not assume that every IR screen accepts every object, or that every PCAP screen supports the same pen or glove. Touch-point counts also need to be checked in the operating system and application used for deployment.

Consider the complete installation

Ask how the touch assembly is integrated, what clearances are needed and whether accessories can obstruct the sensing area. Review cleaning and fault-reporting instructions. A sample installed in the intended environment is more informative than a specification comparison alone.

Choose for the workflow

For writing-intensive rooms, prioritize the observed writing and erasing workflow. For public interaction, test the exact gestures and input conditions expected. Review the interactive flat panel models and request confirmation of the touch technology available for your chosen size and series. Include the sample test results with the approved order specification.
